Open Data
Last updated: August 2026
Every print is rendered from real trail geometry and real elevation data. This page names the sources and, where a licence asks for it, gives back the derived data.
Trail geometry
- USGS National Digital Trails, public domain (US federal).
- ITRA / tracedetrail race courses, used with the course pages as the source of record.
- OpenStreetMap, Map data (c) OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License. Trail pages built from this lineage say so above the footer, and the print itself carries the credit.
Elevation
- USGS 3DEP for the United States (public domain).
- AWS Terrain Tiles (Mapzen / Terrarium) elsewhere.
Boundaries and names
Natural Earth, public domain, for country and state polygons and names.
The OpenStreetMap-derived dataset (ODbL 4.6)
The trails we derived from OpenStreetMap, after our own merging, filtering, resampling and elevation sampling, are a Derivative Database under the ODbL and are published in full here:
trails_osm.geojson.gz (gzipped GeoJSON, one LineString per trail with name, country, OSM way and relation ids, distance, gain and per-vertex elevation).
The rest of the catalogue (scraped, USGS and ITRA lineages) is kept in a separate table and is not part of the OpenStreetMap-derived database.
