About the American Lake trail
At 6.5 miles with 1,972 feet of elevation gain, American Lake runs out and back through Central Rockies, from 9,412 feet at its lowest to 11,370 feet at its highest. The steepest pitch reaches 29 percent, against an average of 303 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the strenuous band. The nearest town is Aspen, about 8.2 miles away.
The area
The Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness is a U.S. Wilderness Area located in the Elk Mountains of central Colorado. The 181,535-acre (734.65 km2) wilderness was established in 1980 in the Gunnison and White River national forests.
