At 15.3 miles with 5,770 feet of elevation gain, Golden Ears Hike runs out and back through Vancouver Coast and Mountains, from 619 feet at its lowest to 5,543 feet at its highest. The steepest pitch reaches 83 percent, against an average of 377 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the very strenuous band. The nearest town is Maple Ridge, 10 miles away.

The trail

Golden Ears is the name of the double summit that lies north of Maple Ridge, British Columbia and is visible from most of the western Lower Mainland. The mountain is in Golden Ears Provincial Park, and was originally referred to as Golden Eyries, possibly for golden eagles that were observed near the summit.
