GR 20 Principale is a 94.6-mile point-to-point route in France, climbing 34,248 feet between 833 and 8,418 feet above sea level. The steepest pitch reaches 38 percent, against an average of 362 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the very strenuous band. The nearest town is Porto-Vecchio, 11 miles away.

The trail

The GR 20 (or fra li monti) is a GR footpath that crosses the Mediterranean island of Corsica running approximately north–south, described by the outdoor writer Paddy Dillon as "one of the top trails in the world". The whole trail is about 180 km long with 12,000 m of elevation gain, and is clearly waymarked throughout.
