Mount Wilson is a 13.6-mile out-and-back in Southern California, climbing 4,739 feet between 1,044 and 5,668 feet above sea level. The steepest pitch reaches 46 percent, against an average of 348 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the very strenuous band. The nearest town is Sierra Madre, 1 miles away.

The trail

Mount Wilson is at the peak of the San Gabriel Mountains, located within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County, California. With only minor topographical prominence, the peak is not naturally noticeable from a distance, although it is easily identifiable due to the large number of antennas near its summit.

How hard is Mount Wilson?
