About the Routeburn Track trail
Routeburn Track (Lake Howden Hut) gains 1,357 feet across 5.2 miles of point-to-point route in Fiordland National Park, its elevation running from 2,257 feet up to 3,358 feet. The steepest pitch reaches 27 percent, against an average of 261 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the moderately strenuous band. The nearest town is Queenstown, about 30 miles away.
The trail
The Routeburn Track is a 32 km tramping (hiking) track found in the South Island of New Zealand. The track can be done in either direction, starting on the Queenstown side of the Southern Alps, at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu or on the Te Anau side, at the Divide, several kilometres from the Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound.
