At 10.4 miles with 1,559 feet of elevation gain, Sherd Lake Loop runs out and back through Central Wyoming, from 8,180 feet at its lowest to 9,395 feet at its highest. The steepest pitch reaches 22 percent, against an average of 150 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the strenuous band. The nearest town is Sheridan, about 36 miles away.
The area
The Cloud Peak Wilderness is located in north central Wyoming in the United States. Entirely within Bighorn National Forest, the wilderness was established in 1984 in an effort to preserve the wildest section of the Bighorn Mountains.
