About the Teton Crest Trail hike

At 39 miles with 8,061 feet of elevation gain, Teton Crest Trail runs point to point through Grand Teton National Park, from 6,399 feet at its lowest to 10,659 feet at its highest. The steepest pitch reaches 34 percent, against an average of 207 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the very strenuous band. The nearest town is Jackson, 14.4 km away.

The elevation profile shown here is drawn from 168 points sampled along the real Teton Crest Trail track, and the poster's contour lines come from the same terrain data. The high point comes about 20.2 miles in. Every style on this page uses that data; only the palette and layout change.

The trail

The Teton Crest Trail is a 40-mile (64 km) long hiking trail in the U.S. state of Wyoming that extends from Phillips Pass, on the border of Bridger Teton and Caribou-Targhee National Forests, to String Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Backpacker Magazine calls the Trail one of the "Best Hikes Ever," with "mesmerizing and constant views of jagged peaks." Beginning in the south, the Teton Crest Trail can be accessed in several ways.
