About the Union Peak trail

Union Peak is a 10-mile out-and-back in Crater Lake National Park, climbing 1,638 feet between 6,179 and 7,655 feet above sea level. The steepest pitch reaches 62 percent, against an average of 164 feet of gain per mile. On our gain-and-distance scale it falls in the strenuous band. The nearest town is Union Creek, about 14 miles away.

The trail

Union Peak is a heavily eroded shield volcano in the Cascade Range of central Oregon, located along the Cascade Crest less than 7 miles (11.3 km) southwest of the rim of Crater Lake. Ice age glaciers eroded away most of the flanks of the volcano, leaving numerous deep cirques surrounding a central glacial horn.
